UK based passive fire protection manufacturer Promat has published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for 86% of its products sold within the Etex Building Performance UK division, to provide transparent, third-party verified data to customers, ensuring they have access to credible sustainability information to inform specification.

As part of its ClearChange sustainability program, Promat has increased transparency by providing customers access to environmental declarations for the majority of board products in its current portfolio enabling them to make informed decisions, compare products and potentially reduce their own environmental footprint.

For manufacturers, EPDs provide an important blueprint, allowing them to pinpoint material choices, manufacturing processes and supply chain segments to drive embodied carbon reductions across their portfolio.

Promat’s EPDs are the result of rigorous assessments that are independently verified for impartiality and compliant with industry standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2/A1. These verifications are supported by a dedicated team at Promat who work to ensure that its wide range of products and technologies are covered by EPDs.

Duncan Gardiner, Promat Platform Sustainability and Communications Manager said: “We take our commitment to the environment seriously, and by offering EPDs for most of our current portfolio, we ensure our customers can do the same. There are some instances where EPDs are not possible, such as bespoke and complex applications, however, we are able to provide comprehensive support in these instances to ensure that our customers’ needs are met.”

Current EPDs include Promat’s range of medium density calcium silicate boards including PROMATECT®, SUPALUX®, and MASTERBOARD® which are used in vital building and industrial applications. The EPDs for these products detail the upfront embodied carbon figure of the passive fire protection boards and include information on packaging, waste treatment and end-of-life recycling to evaluate the total embodied carbon figure across the lifecycle of the product.

EPDs also consider manufacturing, and the ways in which environmental impact is reduced. At Promat’s Belgium facility, this includes a mix of hydropower, local CHP and solar energy to mitigate the environmental impact of the manufacturing process.

Duncan added: “Our ClearChange sustainability program demonstrates how we as a company will tackle sustainability challenges, and EPDs are the first step in ensuring we can make a tangible difference to our environmental impact.

“By delivering clear environmental impact data to support our customers, architects and specifiers, we hope to empower the industry to make informed decisions around sustainability, not only to meet regulations but to invest in a more sustainable construction sector.”
