SkillBuild 2025 concluded last week with a final held at the Arena Milton Keynes from the 18th to 20th November. Eight worthy roofing finalists were set a task and given just 18 hours to slate and tile a roof. SIG Roofing is proud to be a sponsor of the event, donating quality materials for the future generation of roofers to demonstrate their skills.

The annual SkillBuild event and construction showcase began in April this year, with six regional heats across the country, concluding on the 1st July. Forty-two roofing apprentices took part, sponsored by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), who organise the roofing competition for this event. The roofers work alongside nine other construction trades, all under the watchful eye of expert judging panels. The competitors are not only set a task to demonstrate their trade skills, but they also have to ensure that they adhere to relevant health and safety protocols.
The top three roofers were awarded at an evening dinner presentation. Third prize of £200 went to Mark Knight from Simian Risk, second prize of £300 went to Levente Szasz from Leeds College of Building, and the roofing overall winner was Samual Jinks from Dalton Roofing, who won £500 and was invited to the Worshipful company of Bricklayers and Tylers Craft Awards, where he will be given the Mason Elliot Award and £1000.
SIG Roofing branches in Warrington, Dundee, Exeter, Bamber Bridge, Gateshead, and Leeds (School Yard) donated slate tiles and 1/3-round hip tiles for their local heats throughout the year, and SIG Roofing in Manchester donated all the nails and screws for all events. Roofing products for the final were supplied by SIG Roofing in Kings Lynn, who donated slates, tiles and accessories.
“We’ve been supporting SkillBuild, through the NFRC, with roofing materials, including slate, for many years, and it’s honestly one of my favourite events. It’s so well run and full of brilliant young roofers who are excited to learn and get stuck in. Being there was a real joy, their energy and enthusiasm were totally infectious!” — Clare Hoskins, Marketing Manager at SIG Roofing
