CARLISLE® Construction Materials is celebrating success at the 2025 NFRC Scottish Roofing Awards, after project partner Site Group won the Green Roofing category for the Tynecastle Student Accommodation project in Edinburgh, which features CARLISLE®’s high-performance RESITRIX® waterproofing system. The winners were revealed at a ceremony held at The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, recognising outstanding achievements and innovation across Scotland’s roofing industry.

The redevelopment of the former B-listed Tynecastle High School combines the retention of its historic façade with two new student accommodation blocks, providing homes for more than 400 University of Edinburgh students. The project, developed by S1 Developments, transforms the historic site while placing sustainability, performance and design integrity at its core.
The roofing design, developed collaboratively by CARLISLE® Site Group, delivers exceptional environmental performance through the integration of RESITRIX® SK W waterproofing membranes, ALUTRIX® vapour barrier membrane, blue and green roof systems and solar PV technology. Across five roof areas, the design incorporates approximately 3,000m³ of rainwater attenuation to manage stormwater sustainably, reduce pressure on drainage networks and support biodiversity. Extensive green roof planting enhances the local ecosystem, while the inclusion of solar PV contributes renewable energy to the development, reducing its reliance on the grid.

CARLISLE® provided full technical support throughout the project, including specification advice, on-site inspections and quality assurance. Site Group carried out the roofing installation, including blue and green roof systems, offering specialist design and training support. Every element of the roofing build-up was selected to ensure long-term performance and resilience, meeting demanding standards for waterproofing integrity, loading and durability.
Simon Glenn, Project Sales Manager at CARLISLE® Construction Materials commented: “This award is a fantastic recognition of true collaboration and technical excellence. Working alongside Site Group, we delivered a complex roofing system that balances sustainability, innovation and long-term performance. Tynecastle demonstrates what is possible when expertise is shared and environmental goals are prioritised.”
The Tynecastle project sets a new benchmark for sustainable roofing in the UK, demonstrating how advanced waterproofing technology, green infrastructure and renewable energy integration can be combined within a single, high-performance system.
